LAB1NG 1SA: VYLH-Philippines celebrates its 11th Founding Anniversary

"BANYUHAY: VYLH-Philippines' Metamorphosis to the New Normal."

Around this theme, the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health-Philippines (VYLH-Philippines) celebrated its 11th Founding Anniversary amidst the pandemic.

Since on-the-ground advocacy works are yet to be encouraged, VYLH-Philippines deliberately thought of activities that would mobilize its members through the different social media platforms. This year, to continuously showcase the volunteers' creative juices in the "new normal",  social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter were used to increase public awareness on the network's advocacy.

Having said that, an 11-day online festivity from July 8 to 18, 2020, was conceptualized in celebration of the network's advocacy and the more than a decade work of volunteer youth leaders throughout the country in promoting the network's four advocacies: newborn screening, folic acid supplementation, rare disorder support, and the latest addition, preconception health.

This year's roster of activities is a fusion of traditional VYLH-Philippines activities and several social media trends, such as TikTok.

On its culminating day, VYLH-Philippines had its annual online "Kamustahan" get-together dinner via Zoom, which was well-attended by its members. It was a blissful night as everyone got to enjoy the short program and participate with the online games. The highlight of the night was the premiere of the the VYLH's song "Be One, VY." The song, composed by Ms. Beau Tinio (Hiraya) of Bohol, was first played during the network's 4th National Leadership Congress.

Video by June Abellar (Hayaw, Negros Occidental)

Despite the situation we are facing, everyone enjoyed celebrating the success of the network. Another highlight on that night was the message given by the network's founding adviser, Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, or Tita Menchit, as what we volunteers are used to calling her. It only goes to show that the pandemic can't stop the volunteers from performing what they love doing even in this very challenging time when most activities are interdicted.

Additionally, in observance of this year's Nutrition Month and National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health-Philippines, together with the Institute of Human Genetics, National Institutes of Health-UP Manila, organized the 5th #FolicacidPH National Social media Day for Folic acid Awareness. The event spearheaded by VYLH-Philippines North and Central Luzon Cluster and supported by Newborn Screening Central Luzon and partner youth organizations, was held under the theme, "Folic Acid Supplementation: Key to Better Health of our Future Generation". Various social media activities and a webinar on folic acid were also organized by the network in support of the observance of the social media day.

For this year's anniversary, the VYLH-Philippines Mindanao Cluster was tasked to spearhead the activities and be the overall-in-charge of the celebration. The Newborn Screening Center - Mindanao, through the generosity of the Unit Head and VYLH-Philippines Mindanao Cluster Adviser, Dr. Conchita Abarquez, or "Tita Conch," sponsored tumblers. The tumblers were sent out to the active members, especially those who have completed the 11-day challenge.#

Looking Back

Founded on July 18, 2009, VYLH-Philippines is the result of the collaboration between the Institute of Human Genetics (IHG)-NIH, UP Manila, the Department of Health and The UPLB Genetics Society, a student organization from UP Los BaƱos. VYLH-Philippines is a network of youth leaders and youth organizations based in schools and communities throughout the country that will champion in increasing public awareness on existing health programs and on the significance of a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

Through the years, the network has conducted national leadership congresses, regional and island-wide youth camps, and youth leader orientations. As of present, VYLH-Philippines has trained more than 500 volunteer youth leaders representing more than 170 youth organizations nationwide. They conduct year-round health promotion and advocacy projects directed towards the promotion of folic acid supplementation, prematurity awareness and newborn screening. Anchored on the theme “VYLH High Five: Educate, Empower, Engage and Experience,” the anniversary celebration was set to encourage every VYLH member to be updated with the current trends of being a volunteer youth. Coincidentally, July was also VYLH’s Organizational Orientation Month, a time when all member organizations are requested to reorient their members about VYLH-Philippines. Orientation sessions were held during the anniversary week and all of July.

Activities during the one-week celebration were not confined to the grounds, social media activity was also launched. The VYLH anniversary celebration used the official hashtags #HighFiveVYLH and #VYLH5thAnniversary, which volunteers could use on Facebook and Twitter. Volunteers were also invited to participate in social media campaigns such as High Five! (July 14), VYLH Five-orites (July 15), and IVolunteer (July 16).

#HIGHFIVE Talk: 5th Anniversary Message From Kuya Emman

Words from VYLH-Philippines National President, Christian Emmanuel Enriquez of VYLH-Philippines Cebu Chapter on the organization's 5th Anniversary.

Words will not be enough to express how far we have come. I am humbled, honored and will forever be
grateful to be part of something so grand not because of its increasing size but because of the value,
effort, love and commitment the members of this organization have continuously shown all throughout
this journey.

Five years of friendship, experience, challenges, work, fun and five years of building a family so strong
that was able to withstand even the challenges of time and calamity (typhoon Yolanda).

To the Pioneers "The Visionary" I salute you, for planting the seed of which the fruits are what we
harvest today. Thank you for your continuous, unending and unselfish support to make sure that the
organization can move and reach its goals.

To my batch mates K4 "The Creative Mind" I admire you, for your creativity, talent and enthusiasm that
allowed us to conceptualize and deliver activities that are considered best practices in the hopes of
strengthening our advocacies.

To our successors I3 "The Silent Worker" I congratulate you, for taking on the challenge and
continuously doing the leg work of inspiring people and transforming them to become learned
individuals.

And E4 "The Future" I thank you, for accepting the responsibility of upholding the principles and
advocacy of the network. You are the hope of the organization.

Our existence would not have been possible without the support of our partners, mentors, advisers,
secretariat among others who I consider as the backbone of the organization. To our Community
Based Organizations, School Based Affiliates my sincerest appreciation for allowing your representatives
to take part of the network's growth and journey.

Indeed you are all GIFTS. It is amazing how the Almighty has allowed us to meet each other and has blessed this unique family we can truly call our own.

May we continue to find light and inspiration from and in each other. May we continue to share knowledge,
creativity and passion. May we continue to strengthen the advocacies of the network and reach wider
coverage of transformed and learned communities. Finally may we continue to become GIFTS to
others.

That is to Give, Invest in Friendship, Time and Spirituality

The VLYH journey continues. Happy Fifth Anniversary!

Anniversary Message from PSOD and Launch of the Online Petition for a Rare Disease Act of the Philippines

July 18, 2014

Dear Officers and Members of the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health - Philippines,

Greetings and congratulations on your 5th Founding Anniversary!

In behalf of the Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders (PSOD), we convey our deepest gratitude for the nationwide support you have given us for the past five years in promoting our advocacy.

Over the years, we have felt significant progress in growing awareness and support from the general public and private sectors for our member patient families. Much of this we sincerely attribute to the creative programs you have launched nationwide, most especially during the yearly celebration of the National Rare Disease Week and World Rare Disease Day. The voluntary participation of your members at PSOD’s activities is much appreciated. We are truly so blessed by your partnership.

We are ecstatic that you have initiated and have chosen to launch the online petition to call for the support of the enactment of the “Rare Disease Act of the Philippines” at Change.org on this special day, your Fifth Founding Anniversary. The journey to realize this into law will be long and very challenging. Your viral support will be very crucial. We truly believe that hand in hand, working together, this can be realized, and that someday, soon sustainable access to health support for persons afflicted with rare disease and their families will be possible.

We wish you success in growing your organization and individual fulfillment in the laudable work you all do together. In behalf of our member patient families, the Board of Directors and staff of PSOD,….MARAMING, MARAMING SALAMAT.

Sincerely,

(signed)
Cynthia K. Magdaraog
President

"Rare Disease Act of the Philippines" within the 16th Congress

Since it's inception in 2009, VYLH-Philippines has been conducting activities designed to increase the public's awareness on the plight and fight of Filipino with orphan or rare disorders. These

Persons (mostly children) afflicted with a rare genetic disease are "orphaned" by society. They suffer from social abandonment because of lack of existing network of support to aid them. Medical help is elusive under the conditions of the country's health priority. Because the nature of rare disease (otherwise known as orphan disorders) are long standing, life threatening, progressive and require multidisciplinary care, essential treatment and supportive care likewise require lifelong administration.

Persons born with and afflicted with rare or orphan disorders are a vulnerable and special population. Despite the small population, like any other Filipino citizen, they too have an equal right to life and and equal right to access health support.

The law will put in place a permanent and sustainable mechanism by which the State shall institutionalize a system that is comprehensive, integrative and sustainable, and will facilitate the collaboration of various stakeholders towards the provision of early and sustainable care of every person afflicted with rare or orphan disorders.

Youth on fire: VYLH marks four years of advocating health

Written by Joan Mae Barredo*

July 18, 2009. A challenge was accepted.

July 18, 2013. Four years after, the commitment, our commitment, is still on fire. Igniting, better than ever. Young health advocates all over the nation came together as we celebrated the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health or the VYLH-Philippines’s fourth anniversary. Distance was not even a hindrance as VYLH from different clusters—Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—bonded in solidarity as we commemorated our four years of health advocacies, four years of volunteerism, and four years of solid friendship.

“As we celebrate our 4th anniversary in our own unique and creative ways, may it be true to all to light four white candles representing our growth, and fly four VYLH colored balloons, where our wishes are tied,” states VYLH Philippines President Christian Emmanuel Enriquez.

VYLH-Philippines Annual Skype Gathering

United by the common objective to empower the youth for health and the goal to have a more health-conscious community, youth leaders gathered in each cluster marked VYLH’s four years through simple gatherings, happy chitchats via Skype, and commemorative “selfies” posted on Facebook days before the actual celebration.

Youth Leaders’ says

Christine Querubin, VYLH NCR Vice President enthuses, “friendship is one of the greatest treasures in life and I have gained hundreds of amazing friends because  of VYLH. The best part is that we share the collective desire to become harbingers of change and for four years now, we have become the change we want to see in the world.”

Irish Faith, from VYLH Mindanao, agrees through sturdy statements, “VYLH: good desire, good constituent, strong connection.” Remarkable events and accomplishments have colored the past four vibrant years of VYLH: a youth camp in Tagaytay, another three cluster-wide camps in different areas in the country, two nationwide congresses, among others. Amidst these gatherings, there’s the diverse activities each volunteer conducts in various institutions and communities, carrying VYLH’s three main advocacies: folic acid awareness campaign, newborn screening promotion, and orphan disorders support. This November, VYLH will once again exhibit the magnitude of deed youth can do during the International Conference on Birth Defects and Disabilities which will be held in Cebu.

We continue to expand and reach more volunteer youth leaders in every corner of the country, all in the name of a more informed and healthy Philippines. And as we embark the next four years and more of our journey, we remain steadfast to the commitment we have made during that rainy day, 18th of July, four years ago.

VYLH-Philippines Fourth Anniversary Message from the National President

Indeed we have come a long way.

As we celebrate this year’s growth, I would like to share four points that I think we should remember.

Value
Let us value the things that matters. Each of us has different experiences as volunteers. May we value the real essence of what we are fighting for.  May we also value the people who are with us as we move forward, and value the growth we have had for the last four years.

Yearn
May we continue to have a strong and genuine desire to continue what we have started despite the difficulties and struggles we face in everyday. May we yearn to do more, to give more, to share more, and to live more for the good of oneself and others.

Learn
May we seek not just knowledge but rather wisdom for all the experiences that we have. May we continue to learn from each other’s stories and challenges.  May we continue to advocate the power of the youth to educate and become agents of change for a better, brighter and healthier Philippines.  And, may we continuously seek to learn and not limit ourselves to what we are accustomed to.

Hope
May we find hope amongst ourselves that despite the difficulties and challenges of being one at all times. May we find hope in the cause that we are fighting for, and draw strength from within as we continue to move forward towards further growth and development.  May we also find hope from every individual that we meet because there will come a time that things will be better off as they are now.

As we celebrate our 4th anniversary in our own unique and creative ways, may it be true to all to light four white candles representing our growth, and fly four VYLH colored balloons, where our wishes are tied, before sun sets at the end of this week.

May every VYLH cluster/division let go of their wishes for the organization and offer the purest of our intentions to the Almighty.

My heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity of being one among the few to be part of an organization one can always be proud to call our own despite the distance or challenges which everyone may find on their way back to a place we call home.

Happy 4th Anniversary VYLH!

In humble representation of your great accomplishments, my salutations and congratulations for another successful year full of values, yearning, learning and hope

With much honor,
